You heard it here first! I had known about this project for a while and it was a hard thing to not be able to talk about it. Digital Extremes sent along this email and I will have a ton of screens for you later today!
Quote:
DIGITAL EXTREMES GOES BEYOND UNREAL WITH NEW GAME AND NEW PUBLISHER!

Groove Games Snags Digital Extremes’ Next First-Person Action Blockbuster - Pariah

TORONTO – March 9, 2004 – Top independent game development studio, Digital Extremes and global interactive game publisher, Groove Games today announced their partnership on a new first-person action game based on an original intellectual property created and owned by Digital Extremes. Best known for creating the multi-million unit selling Unreal® franchise, Digital Extremes has set the standard for fine-tuned gameplay and technologically impressive graphics in the first-person action genre. With such award-winning hits as Unreal Tournament and Unreal Championship, Digital Extremes is looking beyond the Unreal universe and is working to raise the bar again. The new game, ominously named Pariah™, has been quietly in production for the past two years and is currently planned for the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft and the personal computer.

Groove Games, an up-and-upcoming Canadian-based publisher flew in under the radar to sign the worldwide publishing rights to Pariah, beating out several of the bigger traditional publishers also bidding on it. Groove will be publishing the game in North America and has licensed Pariah to Hip Interactive Europe to distribute and publish the title in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

“After seeing Pariah in action and hearing the plans Digital Extremes has for it, we knew we had to be a part of it,” said Jon Walsh, CEO of Groove Games. “Digital Extremes has a tremendous track record for creating incredibly entertaining games, therefore we know how impressive Pariah is going to be when it’s ready to be unleashed on the masses.”
“Working with Groove Games is a breath of fresh air,” expressed James Schmalz, founder and creative director of Digital Extremes. “They clearly share our vision for creating the best game possible, which is our intention for every game we make. Pariah is our most ambitious project to date and with Groove’s support, it will reach its full potential.”

“This industry was built on a collaborative relationship between the developer and publisher. That’s something we want to emphasize now more than ever,” Mr. Walsh continued. “We want to get back to the model where the publisher and developer work seamlessly together; where ultimately, and most importantly, the primary objective is to create the best game possible. It’s simple really; everybody wins, especially the gamers.”

A few details on Pariah have been revealed through the official website, www.pariahgame.com . At the site, several screenshots showing a first look of the Xbox version of the game can be found along with a countdown to the launch of the full website and a spot to register to receive additional details on the game as they’re released.

The game focuses on a robust immersive storyline that weaves survival elements into the traditional run-and-gun style of first-person action games. Unsurprising will be the graphic marvel and fine-tuned gameplay of Pariah, a trademark gamers have come to expect from any Digital Extremes game. Not straying too far from their roots, Digital Extremes is building Pariah with the latest version of the technologically powerful Unreal engine by Epic Games.

Additional details on the game including the release date will be revealed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in May.
I am at work right now so I have no means of uploading the screenies. I will definitely post them as soon as I get home later on tonight!

Tycho,

Meredith (PR Officer for Digital Extremes) sent out the press release at 10:53 AM EST. The first words in her accompanying email were, and I quote verbosely, "Our silence is broken!".

Blues News only posted about this game at 12:22 PM on March 9 (today).

IGN today posted a news story as well (no time specified).

BeyondUnreal posted the story at 1:02PM.

You say you've been "keeping this one a secret for a while".

I'll let everyone decide what is the truth.

The following post is not intended to disrespect, insult, or otherwise harm anyone in any way. It only provides the facts that can be interpreted in any way.

First, let's get the facts straight.

As you all know, Digital Extremes has been working on this game for quite a while, and has just recently sent out a press release. The press release was sent to all major gaming news sites at about 12:00 CST. There was no prior knowledge of the game outside of the developers. No offense to Tycho, but I would appreciate it if you did not take credit for "knowing all along and keeping it a secret." This can easily be proven false, but even common sense asks "why would they tell one person outside of the developer team and nobody else?"

UnrealOps has always been a great source of news and the facts, but lately some posts were made that can be considered false and unjustified.

In regards to "You heard it here first" I can only say that this is just a matter of luck. Yes, sometimes UnrealOps posts the news first, but this is no reason to say that it is the best news site on the internet. However, this is not a large problem but when there are claims as to having an inside track with DE, suspicion and distrust arises.

Thank you for your time, and I hope you don't take this the wrong way.

LOL. The nerve of some people. Hey dipshits I have know about this for a while now. Have you? Jesus what is up with Beyond Unreal lately. How about this you post your news and I will post mine. We posted first out of any Unreal site. I didn't say world exclusive and then you post anon. Gimme a break people and get a real life!

As for the anon post I have been to DE 5 times and now some of the team personally? Do you? I know several things I can't talk about with DE and Epic. I value my relationships with both places so don't try and act like we are some amatuer site that makes up news and contacts. Any thing else you want to see behind an anon post?

Very well. I will give you the benefit of the doubt. However, even in the off chance DE told you exclusively about the game, why do you feel the need to make a statement about it? For bragging rights? Does it really matter if you knew before others did? I don't really think so, and it's hardly necessary to get angry in this situation.

Woah there... there's no BU vs UO thing, man! It's all good.

Back to the topic though, I'm glad DE is exploring other areas... they're loaded with talent. I'm a little sorry to see the "dream team" go in different directions, but I guess that just means double the fun for us, right?

Oh, yeah... new forum design? Looks nice!

Hal,

Sorry for the bitterness but I was under the impression that I had sorted the issues out with BU. Hell for me to apologize on my own site is pretty major. Yes I know of some things in advance but obviously I couldn't say anthing. I dinnae know what the hell Zaccix and Alien8 are riled up about because I didn't say one bad thing about BU in any post lately.
