While I am waiting to hear back from a certain Dev so I can finish up part three, I thought I would share this tidbit of information with you. It was sent in by Mr. Lane after he had read part one.

Nice article, but what many dont know is that Unreal was not the first FPS to have alternate fire for weapons.

A game called Blood was the first I was aware of, released in 1997. This game used the by now ancient Build engine (originally for duke nukem) and never got popular amongst the masses, largely due to the superior technology of Quake and Quake 2 (which crushed alot of good games unfortunately). It did develop a cult following though, of which I was a part. I still to this day think it has some of the best weapons I have seen in an FPS, and its multiplayer is a blast.

If Blood had have come out when Duke Nukem did in 1995, it would have taken the gaming world by storm similar to the way Doom did in 1993. Doom of course is still the FPS king Smile, there will never be another like it.

As for unreal, I unfortunately played UT first so the effect was not so profound. With UT i was completely hooked immediately, and eventually decided to get U1 cheap. It was not what I expected, but it still impressed me greatly with its outdoor environments and music/sounds.

IMO U1 and UT's biggest achievements where that they were different then Quake, something that was desperately needed at the time.

Lets hope UT2004 is going to live up to the name Smile
I had heard of Blood but never got a chance to play it myself. However, I am thankful for him sending this information in for me to share.

Ah yes... Blood. What a fun and excessively gory game that was. Very Happy

TBH though, Blood didn't really do a whole lot with their alt-fires. Most of them were to the effect of "Use 10x as much ammo to just spray fire around the room!". They weren't nearly as refined nor creative as UT's (and certainly nothing like the glorious 'combo').
They were pretty fun though!

/me lights an aerosol can on fire, throws it at Tycho, and runs

I played D3D a TON before playing Blood so maybe that kinda spoiled it for me, but Blood was still very cool in a lot of ways. I remember it being the first FPS with a Nuclear weapon.

What the hell is that SOUND???? BOOOOOM!!!!!!!

"Holy Sh*T!"

Those bastards wouldn't tell me where to find that nuke though. I still don't know where they got it in that level!

That was a "Fire and Forget" weapon. If someone fired at you, forget about it!

With regards to FPS's with alternate fire:

Quote:
A year and a half after the release of Pathway Into Darkness, during the holiday season of 1994, Bungie Software would release one of the games it's best known for: Marathon, an innovative first-person shooter that featured a detailed story line, high-resolution graphics and network multiplayer capabilities.

Okay okay, so it was Mac-only (although Marathon 2 or Infinity eventually went mult-platform), but it definitely had alternate fire! Very Happy
