Quoted straight from Gamespot:

Online cheating has become a constant nuisance for gamers over the last few years, with many high profile titles suffering at the hands of less-than-honest players finding ways to exploit their favorite games. For the release of Atari and Epic Games' Unreal Tournament 2004, the game itself was supposed to come complete with all manner of different cheat blockers. Despite this fact, cheaters have been popping up on the servers. However, at the very least, it seems cheaters within UT 2004's servers won't be able to get away with it for very long.
In a post on Atari's forums, an Epic Games programmer made it known that anyone caught cheating online in UT 2004 would be permanently banned from the game. Specifically, the CD-key of the user would be blocked, thus preventing the cheater's registered copy from authenticating via the server, and ultimately locking them out. Of course, the best way to prove a point is by example, and in the post, the programmer mentioned a specific user who had been banned for cheating in the game. That user went on to reply in the thread, confirming he had been banned, and even posting a screenshot of the screen displayed when he attempted to log onto the UT 2004 servers. |
Little severe? That's what gives it so much effect... Will it make people think twice about cheating? Definitely... Will they still do it? Remains to be seen.... |

I only have 1 hope. They make DAMN sure that the person is cheating before they go off and ban the CD-Key. Otherwise I can smell a lawsuit on their hands... Still and all though, it's good news to hear that the company is atleast doing SOMETHING about it. |

This cheating deal is a touchy subject. Many people think if you cheat your a stupid whiny little brat who cant make it through a whoel game wicthout cheating. Others think that if you can figure out a way to cheat then all for you computer geek. I personally think that if you can figure out a way to do it then just do it on your own server and not anybody else's or just do it on your own single player games. This kind of defeats the purpose to a point though. I also think that if you cheat online you should be punished as described in the article. If you can cheat just dont spoil the game for others and teach them how or make it impossible for them to get a kill. I find myself in between the line at sometimes and then on the pro or con side. Whatever side you are on jsut make sure its for the good reasons. I mostly find myself on the no cheating online side But congradulations whoever found a way to cheat by not going online.

I know I'd do the same.
I'd figure if he didn't want to play the game and hated it so badly, might as well help him stay out of the game
The weird part is, the way aimbotters cheated for 2k3 is supposedly not even needed for 2k4 aimbots |

Well, I don't really believe this, cause that's not a legal reason to get your CD-KEY banned, and if that person is going to sue he will win no doubt about that, even banning someone because he/she cheats is not a legal reason to get your CD-KEY banned as it's not mentioned anywhere in the license agreement. So they are in for a hefty lawsuit if they ban someone and that person is willing to sue.. |

Technically, they're providing you a free service when you purchase the game. That is the ability to play online. They are fully within their rights to revoke that ability, as you can still use the product you purchased, just without their "free service" attached. |

but that would be like selling a "bad" vegetable... "Works, but you can't fully enjoy it with eating it."
I know what you mean and I agree but just had to come with this metaphore |
