Now before I delve into the topic a little I want everyone to remember that Cliff's thoughts in this news post are his own and don't necessarily reflect Epic's thoughts. With all of the hub-bub about Steam and it's fairly successful re-launch and the added recent fixes I wondered what Cliff's thoughts were. Here is our convo.
What are your thoughts on Steam's success. Do you think it will have an affect on the way big Devs (such as Epic) distribute their games?
I honestly haven't seen any concrete numbers to support Steam's success. It most certainly seems like the ideal venue for a developer especially an independent one to distribute their games. Even if Steam is a big success it'll still be 5 years minimum before it becomes the norm. Halo2 and GTA4 recently showed how big of a blockbuster a game still can be at retail. While he brings up some valid points I think that it is a step in the right direction. I guess at this point only time will tell. |

As much as I do like the control Steam offers developers it is a pain to use. I really hope this model is altered quite a bit before it becomes everyday or another alternative surfaces. |

While I love the D/s scene, I really hate to have to ask permission every time I want to play a game. IMNSHO, Steam inhibits my fair use as a paying consumer. If I want to install & uninstall the game several hundred times over the course of a week, or even years, I should be able to amuse myself to no end with these delights. Anyway, you all have heard this shizzle before, so I won't keep on with it. Steam bad |

Steam (and similar systems) will only be any good for developers.
And even then I doubt it can help the small studios as they still need to market their game.
You can't just dump it on Steam and expect to make a profit.
Never mind that it doesn't even stop piracy, because instead of forcing warez-scum to crack each and every release they only need to crack the Steam-system and gain access to anything.
And on top of that they get to use all the 'free' bandwidth that Valve and co are offering (while the regular users will suffer) ...
As a consumer I'd say the worst part of Steam is that it's Steam that is controlling when & where I can play what game.
That's the kind of control I refuse to give to any company.
That's the kind of control that Microsoft would kill for ... |
