Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the first footage of UE 3.0 is out! This is from the NV40 launch, and the speaker is Tim Sweeney. Details aren't incredibly clear, but the geometry and effects are clear. I have to say that I am amazed! Keep in mind that this technology is way down the road... but we can still be amazed. Also, they showcase some creatures from a as-of-yet unannounced game... this is a great video. Stop reading this - go!

-update- As I had mentioned earlier I wanted to try and find a better quality video of this before I linked the video. In absolute fairness to Epic I think it should be seen as it was meant to be and not a low quality video cam. I personally have taken the link down (Epic didn't ask me to) but I will leave the screenshot up because it is of good quality and is a tribute to their hard work. Who knows maybe they will change their mind and release a better version like they did the GDC 2002 Footage. - Tycho

Oh holy shit. I think it's safe to say beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is no 3D renderer in existence that comes vaguely close to this. I wasn't even wowed this much when I first saw D3 or HL2 tech in action. Hell, I've never been so astonished by a video of any kind, full stop.

What amazes me most (and it's a tough call) is that there is hardware in existence that can actually run this tech at damn good detail levels -and even in open areas- with very little visible framerate damage. I'm guessing those machines were running 3.5ghz, 1gb ram and of course an NV40 card, and we'll all have rigs BETTER than that in a year and a half's time!

Think about it. A year and a half ago, a very-top-of-the-range model was 2ghz, 256/512 ddr and a high-end GF3 or what's by modern standards a lower-end GF4 (forgotten when GF4s were released). You'll be able to run Unreal Engine 3! You WILL have the powah!!!

Damn, the video was amazing. It totally blew me away with all the possibilities and effects. Still miss some better physics like in HL2.. Right now I think the current physics engine is a little weak (when it comes to stuff like breaking class.. Took me three steps in Half-Life, I am still having difficulties on the unreal engine).. Effect wize -> Sweet Smile

Donīt be to confident about machines, existing today, running these things quite good. When Nvidia showed of their GeForce3 card, they showed us Doom3 as well and said that this is the card for these things and we all know that a GeForce 3 is not going to do the trick when Doom3 hits the shelves ! Promotion isnīt really saying that much. They are only trying to sell stuff and wants us to belive that this really is THE card you should have. When we actually see a Unreal engine 3 game, these cards will probably be pretty bad. They are giving us an illusion that these cards will do the trick for us even in the future but look now and in the past and you will find the answer !

In the current UnrealEngine the physics is is done by the not so great Karma engine. In the new engine however, they will be using the Novodex engine which so far looks great. I suggest you download the novodex demo SDK for hours of fun with falling boxes and cows and stuff Very Happy
