I think I will wait for teh demo before I pass final judgement, but it is going to have to be some demo for me to fork out the money. BTW the rebate sounds a little shady to me to. Epic should not punish their customers who bout UT2K3 just because their cash cows did not live up to expectations. Time will tell.
PS Raven quit stealing my material. I am the lazy one. |

Yes the game off the shelf when released was buggy...falling through floors, disappearing trans, not dying when falling into oblivion and let's not forget the netcode. (Sure, it has been reported that EPIC did not change the netcode but really no way to prove or disprove) |
Name me a game (PC only please, consoles really don't count in this statement) recently that hasn't been buggy upon release? Anymore this seems to be the defacto standard among all game developing companies. Not that it's intentional mind you, but there are just so many different ways that a system could/can be configured that they've got to take ALL of those into account. That's a major task, trust me, I've been there on that one Sucked big time.

2K4 is a mission pack in that all it does is introduce some new content, the basic game remains the same. A few new weapons, characters and the addition of vehicles does not make it a new game....it just modifies the original. |
Actually, there's no proof on either side as to how much new contect UT2k4 will contain. The perverbal "hidden rabbit" could still be out there waiting to be pulled from the hat. However, to make some points on this.
If you look at most games now a days that release "addons", the price margin is close, VERY close. Why, I remember my purchase of Heroes of Might and Magic 4, good game mind you, and for $40 (right at release time), I couldn't quite beat the price. Now the "expansions" have come out, and they themselves are even $30 a shot. Not much of a price difference for "some new content". And there are other examples, though in my currently hung-over state, I can't quite think of them. Sorry.

I still play 2k3 when I have time so don't take this the wrong way....I do like the game as it stands now. I just won't pay "new game" price for something that is basically nothing more than an expansion pack. (My loss I guess) |
Well, to the best of my knowledge, there has been a discussion on a rebate, which is honestly the only way to really stop someone from buying only the "update" version, and then using someone elses UT2k3 copy to install, then just updating and using those cd's if required. (After seeing this done far to many times to mircosoft products, it's kinda hard to not say it wouldn't happen )....

Did EPIC make a mistake in branding 2k3 as Unreal Tournament. The game for oldskool UT players did not live up to its predecessor but it did bring in new fans. Should EPIC have considered a different title or perhaps a slight change to the title of the game? |
I don't really see where the problem is with using the UT name. Heck I know many "oldskool" players who complained heavily at the sight of Quake3 as "Quake 2 was the MANS game, Quake3 looked ghey"... or some sort of nonsense. Honestly though? Times change, technology changes, and things come back from the dead. Hell! their continueing the Wolfenstein series, the DOOM series, and what's next? Terminal Velocity? Jazz Jackrabbit? (ok ok ok, the last one was just a quick jabb at cliffy)
I think Epic did the right thing by continueing on the game series, and making sure that it was well designed at the same time. No one can deny that the tools they've put in the hands of the community are some of the most powerful out there, and that alone can make a game great. Hell, just look at the popularity of the Jailbreak mod, and you'll find that it's not as much about what comes in the box, but what can be created by the community that owns those boxes. That's where the power of the UT engine comes in, and that's why I think that the continuation of the brand was right and just.
BTW: sorry if I sounded like I was looking for a troll during any of my previous posts, I was trying to get an informed discussion going on about it, not go troll huntin. |
