- We interrupt P's news day to bring you this special bulletin - I just received a mail from the Xfire Team about their support for upcoming games. Here is what they wrote.
Quote:
Xfire already supports Battlefield Vietnam, UT2K4 and Far Cry at the time of their releases. Your audience and your community will certainly be interested in knowing that they can easily find other people playing these games using Xfire.

As you already know, Xfire is the first instant messenger designed for gamers. You can find more info on and download Xfire at www.xfire.com.
Please, let me know if you have any questions. Smile See you in these games using Xfire!
I know some of you have tried this out and tell me it works pretty good. I just may have to try it out myself. - We now resume the news already in progress -

I'd like to take this opertunity to make people completely aware that this companies privacy policy, while admirable, isn't exactly what you'd consider "stunning". While they have made statements stateing they have no spyware, they also in the same breath say they do collect "non-personal" information, and will sell said information to third parties. This next excerpt is taken directly from their Privacy Policy:

Quote:
Xfire also collects, tracks and analyzes information that does not personally identify a user but rather is used in an aggregate form. This aggregate data will be used at Ultimate Arena's discretion and may be shared with third parties, but with no personally identifiable information attached. Ultimate Arena will not review, share, distribute or reference such data except as may be required to provide the requested Ultimate Arena services, or as provided in the Ultimate Arena Terms of Use Agreement, or as may be required by law.

It is my opinion and the opinion of others in security areas that this type of statement is not enough. They either need to completely disclose what type of information they are collecting and "sharing with third parties", or they need to make this more clear on their front page.

This statement is given as a "downloader beware" warning that you should always check and re-check privacy policies before downloading any program, especially those that are free. Some of the internets most horrible spyware pieces (Bonzai Buddy, Kazaa) have been hidden in "free programs". So again, downloader beware.

NOTE: These views are mine and mine alone, and there is no implying that they are the shared views of anyone else associated with UnrealOps.com. If you have a problem with what I've said here, you may take it up with me directly. There is also no implying that I am against said company, only that their privacy policy leaves much to be desired. I have nothing personally against any of the developers of this software.

So there you have it.
