A very interesting read over at DigiTimes points out that the graphics card giant nVidia is looking at offering a 10-20% discount on it's GPU's to graphic card manufacturers to clear out it's inventory. This could mean very good news for anyone looking to upgrade as hopefully atleast one company will pass these savings along to the users! Heck, at the numbers they're quoting, it looks like it should be many manufacturers, just check out this quote:
Quote: |
The total GPU inventory to be liquidated by Nvidia has a value of about US$80 million, compared with an average of US$50 million worth of inventory the company had cleared out in previous fiscal years, said the sources. |
Definitely looks like the next couple of months could be promising for anyone looking for an upgrade for their video card! So keep your eyes locked on the prices, they'll hopefully start falling in the next month or so by a significant figure. |

Woooooooooo! Excellent. I'm looking to upgrade from my faithful eBay bought GeForce 2 in 3 months or so. But would it be worth me buying a cheaper nVidia or waiting for ATi to do the same after they announce their competitor to the GeForce 6800?? What do you guys think I should spend my £70ish on? (roughly $115, or 105 euros) |

Yo, I got an AIW-9600 Pro and it's decent, but even though it does lots more than my old card could, I still wish it was an Nvidia card. Even after all of the driver-optimizing, quality reduction crap that went on, just seemed easier to work with.
I shouldn't complain about my ATI though, it's been good since I re-loaded my OS and got all of the extra goodies working. and not a bad price for video capture, tv tuner, fm radio, Tivo functions, etc.
It can record FM streo in MP3 format so I can tape Bob and Tom in the morning while at work and play it back when I get home. Even rip my favorite sections to enjoy over and over. |

Yeah I was looking at 9600 or 9600XT, but if I can get something of a similar standard in an nVidia card that is a fair bit cheaper (after the aforementioned price cuts) then I'd probably get that. What's the nVidia equivalent iof the 9600 or 9600XT? |

I been out of the loop for a little time (Doesn't take long in the computer world) so I'll have to try and remember what they compared the 9600 to....
I want to say it was like a 5950 or something.
Best bet is to try Newegg.com and you can check out prices for each chipset by all card makers sorted by price. There are all kinds of reviews out there, just try a search engine for performance data.
I bought the AIW card because of the extra goodies (tons) AND because it could also perform well for games. At the time the 9800XT was just coming out.
After reading the specs and review on that New Nvidia card, I'd be tempted to hold off until one of those is in my price range. |
