I always do a complete reinstall every one month. This is because windows seems to loose performance after a few weeks even though I don't install anything else than apps i really need and games. I also do a disk defrag quite often but that doesn't help. I've been doing this with win95, 98, me, 2000 and the xp pro. What I do is I have 2 hdd's. One 40 GB for my system and a 120 Gb for my movies, game backups etc. The 40 Gb drive I partition in 2: 39.5 Gb for the system and 0.5 Gb for the swap. I move the swap entirely on the 0.5 gb partition so it doesn't fragment my system partition. Windows runs a lot faster this way. If I need to reinstall I just format the system drive. I have the emails folder and anything I need to backup on the 120gb drive. This way it takes me an hour to have my new system running again with everything I need. I have 1GB of DDR 333 RAM and an AMD XP 2500+ not overclocked on a nForce 2 based motherboard. I don't see how you run on the same install for anything more than 2 months. I tried various versions of linux but they have a long way to go. |

sounds like you have a slight virus problem.... my parents have been running win98 for the past 7 years... never having a problem
and my aunt and uncle even have been running WinME *shudder* for atleast 4 years without a format....
my suggestion is gettin either McAffe antivirus (its free) or AVG antivirus (the free version or the 30 day trial for ver 7) id recomment the AVG...
the reason i dont recommend Norton, is because ive had viruses convince norton that they are good programs, and not malicious code. |

then you dident configure norton right.
i got norton for bout 5 years now, and it roxors!
NEVER had ANY virus or worm or trojan. this is also becouse i am not stupid enough to open those mail with virusses. i recieve 2-3 viruses per day, and i just dont open em, lets say i do open em, norton will detect it and quarantain it (delete). the firewall is good to, never lets anything trough if i dont want it. and no problems with msn, irc, websites, games.
it just works, no tuning or anything, so easy.
raven, if some program convinced it to give it acces to the internet, you shouldent have downlaoded the virus, but lets say you exedently get one and it trys to acces the internet, what most virusses do, norton will promt if you want to give it acces, so your the one who allowed it.
also let norton update automaticly, mine updates always, since i got my broadband running 24/7, as soon as i boot it checks updates in the background, and downlaods and instals em if theres anything, no problems or anything.
i think norton is the best firewall and virus scanner ever!
also you get ALOT of extras with norton, the best defraging program ever, many people did test, the windows defrager sucks, this one does its job muhc better. you also get alot of other stuff, one button checkup is very good.
no bad things to say about norton, but thats just what i think about it.
ps. i got my win XP home pc downstairs, it needs a format.. but we never did it, it contains to many stuff.. and its to much trouble to go trough or im just lazy.
also, i heared a HD above circa 120 GB isnt usable as only HD in a XP computer, you can use it, but you need a other HD first, smaller one, use that to instal the 200 GB HD. i dont know if this is true, couse i dont know jack about hardware etc, this PC is build by a shop. |
