I received an email from Doug Lombardi of Valve this past week about the Half-Life 2 and CS2 content that is coming out soon. I was confused about what pre-loading meant to an average game like you and I. So I fired him off an email back.

Tycho: Forgive on a simple question but what does pre-loading the Half-Life 2 content to Steam mean? HL2 will be the first Valve game that we
    cover on our gaming site.

Doug: Hi and thanks for mailing us this question. About pre-loading HL2 via Steam: We will be sending out a "Do you want to pre-load HL2" message to all Steam users. If they reply with a "yes," we download game content to their machine. The encrypted pre-loaded files do not give you the authentication necessary to play -- HL2 files are there, but you can't do anything with them. At a later date, we will make the game available via Steam and, and at that time, those who have pre-loaded and purchased it will be authenticated and all set to play.
There I hope that clears some things up for everyone. Secondly I want to say thanks to Doug for getting back with me right away. It will be very interesting to see how Steam does once HL2 goes live. If this turns out to be a fast, efficient and profitable way of getting games out to fans we may very well see other developers do the same.
