I had to take the time out of my busy schedule at the new store to give everyone a pretty interesting tidbit of news. Our super secret inside gaming guy, Ninja X, droppd off some very, very interesting news late last night. It seems as though 3DRealms is starting to slowly drop hints about what is happening with Duke Nuke Forever. Here is what he had to say.
3D Realms has something up their sleeves. They also picked up a lethal artist by the name Feng Zhu (see 'freelance info' on the lefthand side) Feng is currently working with famed director James Cameron and has finished working on Star Wars Episode III. He has also worked with Epic Games. I can assure you...from a very reliable source...DNF IS using the Unreal Engine 3. Also 3DRealms is planning for a 2005/2006 release to tie-in with the anniversary of Duke Nukem. Well what can I say but I hope all of this pans out as I still would like to see a new Duke game sometime. |

George Brousard said on the DNF forums that they aren't using the Unreal 3 engine but a highly customised Unreal 2 engine (which is probably step-for-step as good if not better than the U3 engine after the work they've done to it).
It could be that they are using parts of the Unreal 3 engine, but I doubt they are using the whole thing. |

GB also said sometime ago that they had not changed engines again and he was happy with the tech. |

EDIT: Dragon Rage here - I just noticed a link on BeyondUnreal to a 3dRealms Forums thread that disproves this rumor. |

No, they can't use UnrealEngine3 because Broussard said 3DRealms will no switch to another engine because they fully re-wrote UT2 engine for Duke, and they don't want to restart. |

Um. Well...come 2005/2006 that'll be old tech dude. Don't you think the graphics will lack a little? I know graphics aren't everything in a game, but it's kinda looking at a girl...if she's hot, you want to find out more. |

They just need to get the game out prior to any U3 engine game hitting the streets or they will be in big trouble (graphically that is). Or... of course get on the new engine... |

I bet the game already looks better then anything we have ever seen and that's why it's taking so long. You try to debug Doom3 on a 486 |

Um guest. That is the typical double talk they have been doing for a while. He said first. False OMG! Then later on he did confirm they have been doing upgrades on the second Unreal Engine. So I say again what post of this news post is false? |

Duke Nukem Forever is not an Unreal Engine game anymore. None of the graphics come from the Unreal Engine. 3drealms rewrote the renderer from scratch. The only thing Unreal about Duke Nukem Forever is the netcode and the editor. I thought this was common knowledge as it has been stated by 3drealm's many times. |

This game still exists?!?!?!??! I thougth this was one of those "Lets-see-how-long-we-can-string-along-a-fanbase-into-believing-in-a-fake-game-really-exsts-after-countless-delays" games.
Well once the game supposedly does come out......at least it will have a significant other to spend eternity with. (I think her name was spelled d-i-a-k-a-t-a-n-a).

I will 100% stand by my source. Yes they are using a modified Unreal Engine 2.0 they are also getting new engine info from Epic and they do INDEED have plans on an aniversary edition. Let's see a WEBMASTER from 3DRealms makes a comment on something being false but didn't say what exactly. Doesn't that seem a little fishy to you guys? Until George himself comes out and say we are full of shit I would tend to think our source is on the right track. |

Stop being a Unreal Fanboy and consider that since they REWROTE the engine, the game is in fact not an Unreal game. Give their developers some credit.
Just because they might be looking at Unreal3 as consideration for the future does not make their current game an unreal game. They are looking at many engines, so why is that news relevant. 3drealms had this to say just a few weeks ago:
"We're not using any part of UE3. We've written 100% of the rendering in DNF. We use Unreal for networking, script code and the editor. "
See here
Using only the Unreal Editor does not make it an Unreal Game. The editor and the engine are two separate things. |
