CNN Money posted an interesting article about the future of gaming. They asked several developers, including Greg Zeschuk Joint CEO of BioWare, what they envisioned games to be like by the year 2025. The opinions on this issue are a lot more diverse than I imagined. Ted Price CEO of Insomniac Games predicts that our existing gaming genres will blend into hybrid genres. He does, however, have good news for us Unreal gamers out there.
Quote: |
"But don't worry - we'll still have first-person shooters...and baseball games. Probably." |
While Ed Boone co-creator of the "Mortal Kombat" franchise believes that our current genres are rooted in our psyche and can't be purged. Due to this fact, he believes, that it is impossible to create new types of games no matter how resourceful developers are.
This article goes into one major issue developers are and will be facing in the future, creating lifelike AI. Artificial intelligence in current games, I would have to agree, is either very simple or they have godlike aim and reflexes. I seldom feel defeated by tactical AI. I would say Epic and Crytech are on their way to solving this problem. Greg Zeschuk has this to say about the topic.
Quote: |
"Can we really create truly convincing A.I.?," he said. "And will that make our games more fun and immersive? I'll bet that the attempt to answer these questions in our games will give rise to a host of new genres that are much more dependent on believable character interactions than on fast reflexes." |
Of all the predictions in this article I found Will Wright's, creator of "The Sims", to be the most appealing. Yea I wouldn't have guessed that myself. :p He envisions a game that adapts to the player (difficulty, content, rules, theme). After a while the game will understand what you like or what frustrates you. He says it best.
Quote: |
"After a while my version of 'the game' will become almost unrecognizably different from your version; they each become an external representation of our 'fantasy worlds'." |
From what I have read Fable, at least from a characters standpoint, creates a similar experience. So make sure to read this article located here. What you think gaming will be like in 20 years? What developer's opinion is the most desirable or most realistic to you? And what do you envision gaming to be like in 2025? |

How about one big MMOFPS? I find RPGs, typically, dull. |

thats what i mean accualy, i dont like RPGs to.
but imagine, you can walk trough your own street, with real life grapics, and shoot your neigbours, then get any car you want in the street, and go VERY fast, and if you crash, youll just respawn, and not die..
then you can find a millitary base, get a few friends online to, and rob the base, get some nukes, and start a war against whoever you want (france)
i dont hope this scares you off, and your now affraid of me, and think im some psyco maniac.. i am not.. i mean,, it would be awsomly cool.
have some real life dragraces on the normal roads with some friends, with cars you tuned yourself, and if you crash/get arrested, who cares.. just respawn |

LOL ... Epic isn't even close to "solving" the problem since its "AI" is still the same. Sure, they've solved the railroad-problem and it's gotten a bit better at understanding UT's movement, but other than that it still has zero situational awareness and its tactical/strategic skills is equally non-existant.
Crytech's Far Cry AI was better, but so easily broken that it was barely suited to a singleplayer game ...
If graphics had advanced like the "AI" in games has then we'd still be playing 2D platform games in EGA colours instead of the current high quality 3D graphics. |

I agree the comment about Epic is wishful thinking. Crytech on the other hand has the most sophisticated AI I have played against. The AI in FC seemed to change/adapt everytime I would play a map based on my decisions which is a big improvement in my book. |
