Well I was under the impression that since this game has been in development for the last 3+ years (I think) that they already had an engine liscensed and were working with it.

Duke Nukem Forever To Use Meqon Physics Engine
September 27, 2004 - Swedish group Meqon sent over a press release announcing that their physics engine middleware will be used in Duke Nukem Forever, rather than the industry's favourite, Havok:
Meqon has been focusing on creating the most easy to use and flexible physics engine in existence. George Broussard, CEO of 3D Realms backs them up - "We evaluated several physics SDK's and Meqon was really fast, had the cleanest interface and integrated into our game very quickly."
The physics engine does not only handle basic rigid body simulation, but extends into character and vehicle enhanced physics as well. Mr Broussard comments, "With its advanced feature set, we feel confident that Meqon's next generation physics engine can help us create the next generation of action games." |
It just goes to show you that game devs change their minds all the time! Read the full story over at IGN. |

It just wouldn't be Duke Nukem Forever without it taking forever to be released. :p |

I thought DNF was a joke! They've supposedly switched engines now....what?.......3 times?
Whatever......I've lost total interest and doubt I'll ever buy it. |

This isn't an engine switch!
They switched from the Quake 2 engine to the Unreal engine, and of course despite saying they wouldn't, added stuff from later versions of the Unreal engine to what they made out of the version as it was when they licensed it.
For instance they said they wouldn't implement the terrain feature we got with UT2003 and U2, but I think they decided to implement it after all.
I'm saying what they "made out of it", because they have been rewriting pretty much everything the Unreal engine is; a while ago they claimed only the network code (or something like that) was still the same, if I remember correctly.
I wouldn't expect any less with their development times.
I'll judge this game when it comes out, and I'll ultimately judge it for the game it is, not its development time. |
