Hey everyone! First off, some good news! After all the strife I've had with Alienware, my rig is finally here! There's a minor issue (the lighting) that I've contacted the company about... but there's also something that I wanted to know if any of our readers can help with. My current CPU setup is a Intel D925XCV 925X mobo with a Intel Pentium 4 560 3.6 1MB L2 Cache 800MHZ LGA775 chip. This thing, once the PC has been on for a while, is like a freakin' jet in terms of sound that it puts out! I've looked into some alternative solutions, i.e. taking off the stock fan (which is the Intel one) and putting on some other cooling device, but most everything involves me taking out the motherboard, which I don't feel like doing. Does anyone know of anything I can do (settings wise) or put in (hardware wise) to alleviate the noise? I'm not overclocking at all, nor do I plan to.

Thanks, and see you guys next Friday!

lol, yeha, thats sweet. but i dont know anythign about hardware, so not an optin for me.
question:
i wanted to take off my CPU fan, so i can clean the dust out of the little iron openings.
looks like this:

that part. theres dust in, but i wanted to take off the fan, but if i do that, can i just put it back on?
and it wont come off, its not screwed on, but it has some sort of weird clips.. anyone any idea?

Cheetah, if you want to go off topic, do it somewhere else. Please, PLEASE stop hijacking threads.

Raven - I have a 775 chip though... what water cooler would work with that? I was think of using the Zalman Resinator, but that won't fit w/ my mobo.

DR, why would you have to take out the mobo, just pop off the cpu fan and heatsink, and replace it with something like the Thermaltake Volcano 12 I got for my system. I have the fan running at just shy of half speed and my CPU temp will only vary at most by 5 degrees after several hours of use. At half speed the sound levels are quite unobtrusive, I really have to force myself to listen to hear it. Water cooling is also a good option, and you still shouldnt have to remove the mobo. Now all this is unless Alienware has a really messed up design, but from their track record, I wouldn't be inclined to think so.

cheetah, the best way for a (no offence) n00b like you to clean out your heatsink, is to get a can of compressed air (they sell them at local stores, ask for a can of compressed air) and stick the little tip down in each one of those grooves and pull the trigger. but DO NOT HOLD THE TRIGGER! and do not tip the can upside down, you dont want the liquid co2 to get into your components and screw things up.

that should take care of it.

btw dragon, alienware should have a heatskink for watercooling your cpu. call em up and order one. actually you can order an entire cooling system from em too.... atleast you should be able to

it will cost you a fortune tho...
ok thanks raven. il do that. i got a can of compressed air..
so i musnt hold it upside down, and dont hold the trigger, but tap it..
cool, will try. but wont i blow the dust in deeper? into the heatsink, and onto the CPU?
also, can i just like instal a fan controller? couse my PC is very noisy, and the wind that comes out is cooler then the room temperature. so its cooling the god damn room. thats how good it cools. but i guess i could buy a fan control and put em at half speed. is this hard to instal? and expensif? and do i need new fans? (i got 2 fans on the back that are with colourd LEDs)

yes you will just blow it deeper into your pc, but thats when you blow the entire pc out. you just start there (or at the top of the mobo) and work your way down and out

and yes the water cooling sys will cost about 200-300 bucks

no, i mean wont you blow the dust form the end of the heatsink, where the fan is, deeper onto the mobo onto the CPU chip?

well 99.999999999% of the time the heatsink and cpu are touching with only less than a millimeter between them, so i dont think your going to have a problem Wink

and you cant get deeper into the mobo, just under it, and in that case you just have to remove the other side of the case and blow it out that way.

what does the distance from heatsink to CPU has to do wiht this?

i cant open the other side, unless i use a chainsaw.. but im not gonna do that.
to expensif to rent.

oh nevermind.... your being difficult Razz

you were worried about getting dust between the cpu and heatsink correct? well that >1mm gap will not let dust in unless its perfectaly aimed.

and to answer your next question (because i know its coming) you cant get dust between your cpu and mobo (in the socket), because it is physically impossible to do so. so there Razz

Wink
