Hmmm is anyone else thinking that since their doing a bunch of UC2 updates that the game is almost ready to ship? HERES TO HOPING!

Another idea we'd had from the beginning was character-specific melee weapons. If you're fighting as a Skaarj, you don't want to go pick up a hammer to kill people up close -- you want to use your blades, and rip up some fools! So we had messed with a few different ideas for melee weapons, and eventually went down the road of having a few swing attacks for each weapon. We started with charge-up attacks like the impact hammer, which would auto-fire when you got close to an enemy. Those are really great for networked games, because you don't have to twitch at the perfect time, the server does it for you. Unfortunately, that meant melee combat consisted of charging up an attack, running around the arena, bumping into someone, and killing them. So we switched to multiple types of attacks, and used wide-area spin attacks. Those are still okay in high-latency situations, because you don't have to aim perfectly, but you still have to be close and get it right.

So, we built what we thought was a fun melee game, where two characters would go back and forth with shields, spin attacks, and heavy attacks. But it all went to pieces as soon as someone came along with a rocket launcher, and that was the next big hurdle. For that, we added a few moves to help you get close to that shooter as quickly as possible (jump attack, pounce moves) and the shield let you absorb extra fire while getting there. The real defining moment was adding in the reflect, which lets you send their projectiles right back in their face. It's risky (miss, and you get hit by that rocket) but a reflect projectile does extra damage. When you're holding a flak and you see a guy with his melee weapons out, you really have to think twice before unloading on him, because there's a good chance it'll come back.
Anyways heres another Developers Diary that you can read while your waiting patiently for the game.
