I don't think it is remotely close to awful. The weapons seem pretty balanced (357 is a little powerful), runs real smooth on my machine, the netcode is as good as UT2K4 for me, and it looks amazing. Chucking sinks and toilets at people is super fun. The models all look great and the environments are well designed. If you dissatisfied with the number of levels remember Valve didn't even need to release DM. And the Half-Life community will put out lots of maps soon. I think it is a nice change from UT DM since you have to conserve ammo, reload, and everyone isn't hopping (double dodging) around all the time. |

That's exactly what's wrong with it. Well, nearly, let me explain...
It's absolute chaos. Most weapons kill instantly or very quickly (instagib toilets/pistols anyone?) and you can't dodge, meaning the focus is purely on killing the enemy before they kill you- CS with less organisation, instagib without the dodging. The fundamental flaw is that the levels are fairly open and in a firefight you can have five people aiming at you at once. Without any hope of preserving your own life, each respawn has a very brief lease of life unless you find a corner to camp in with your .357.
:edit: Of course it's not exactly IG or CS, you do have to ferret around for weapons- yet more chances for a fresh spawnee to get instantly killed by someone camping the real weapons... not to mention that reloading just worsens the aforementioned open-areas-firefight problem. |

Well I guess I just like both types of games. As I am maturing as a gamer I do really like games that reload, have a cone of fire system, and quick kills. Now if I could only get over my dislike for realistic shooters. Maybe it is due the war and my brother serving in Iraq last year and possibly going back. I would rather play games in unrealistic setttings since it takes me away from reality and thinking about all those people really dying. |
