Advent Rising, developed by GlyphX, is closing in on its May release date for the Xbox. This title is the first in a trilogy of games. Offering rich story lines, multiple weapons, super powers, rich Unreal graphics, and a soundtrack performed by the Los Angeles Union Orchestra. Advent Rising could be a perfect single player experience. You play the role of Gideon a gifted human seeking humanities origions.
Gamespot and IGN both conducted previews with GlyphX. The IGN preview being a lot more enthusiastic about Advent Rising than Gamespot. Either paints the picture of an epic action shooter set in a futuristic setting. Additions to the game, since our last preview, include a true first person shooter mod & flick targeting. IGN describes flick targeting like this:
Quote: |
By quickly tapping the analog controller, players rapidly toggle the targeting reticule to any enemy on screen. If you push the right analog slowly it simply pans the camera across the screen, but by flicking you receive an ultra fast targeting reticule, upon which your character loosely operates like a spoke on a wheel to compose attacks. It sounds pretty simple, actually a lot like Zelda's z-targeting. While it is a variation of z-targeting, it's better and different. Because the reticule can move so quickly without moving the camera along with it and dizzying gamers, GlphyX can actually ramp up the speed with which enemies attack, leap, and animate. You'll see enemies dart across the screen, jump off second stories, and move at incredible rates in their pursuit if you. |
Another cool aspect of Advent Rising is that you start off with all the weapons. This is very unusual for most shooters. Instead GlyphX's gives you all the weapons and allows you to upgrade them along with your abilities. The weapons or abilities that you like will upgrade faster than the rest of your arsenel. But the fun doesn't stop there. Filing the void of the weapon chasing Advent Rising offers 10 special powers. Gamespot describes them as:
Quote: |
Gideon will begin to discover innate special powers that will put any regular firearm to shame. One of these powers is telekinesis, which will let you pick up environmental objects and hurl them at enemies. But while other games with this ability let you handle only one object at a time, Advent will let you pick up whole groups of objects in a general area, which naturally gives the attack some extra oomph. Another power lets you create a shield of energy that you can carry in front of you or drop down on the ground as deployable cover. A third gives you a slow-motion effect that will obviously make it easier to avoid enemy attacks. Of course, these defensive powers come in addition to Gideon's array of attack abilities, which let you fling enemies into the air with kinetic energy, blast them with charged power, and so on. |
And if you are not sold of Advent Rising yet just check out the official trailer. It really sets the mood and storyline up well.
This is going to be one heck of a polished title. And I will definitely start giving Advent Rising a little bit more love aroud here. It may be a little late but we are going to add Advent Rising to our current poll. My apologies to GlyphX for allowing Advent Rising to fall off my radar.
