Good morning and happy pre-Ground Hogs Day. I can't remember how long it has been since I was as ansy to get a winter over as I am this one. Mind you I am not really sick of the snow, it is just that I have several cool things that I want to do this spring.
Speaking of cool things and not-so-cool things, I finished putting together the new case this weekend. To celebrate I bought a cool LED fan and heatsink. For those of you that live with a girl you know that you can't take her shopping for you and not pick up something for them. So after telling her I would setup her little computer for the Internet, I went out and bought a router as well. Now I gotta admit it had been a long time since I had more than one computer hooked up. Heck not since Grinner and I were roomates back in 2001. So I was a little rusty but it all came back pretty fast.
I did a fresh install of Windows XP and a fresh install of good ole' Windows 98SE on hers. Followed the instructions on the router, then setup mine, checked the Net (it worked), setup hers checked the Net (it worked), and then opened up Messenger (it worked) and finally went to open up mIRC and chat it up online. Bam! It couldn't connect. Hmm, I thought, that was weired I was able to connect through my old roomates router just two weeks ago. Checked out the mIRC help file, yup, some firewall could cause problems. Well therein lies the dilema, I am a Novice at routers and firewalls. Can anyone out there help an oldskool nerd out with these newskool toys?
-edit- Barbos saves the day! Apparently I didn't install anything wrong after all. The main GameSurge IRC server is down and he gave me another ip to use. Good to know I am not that much of a firewall noob. |
