It seems that this question and answer session has escaped the grasp of most major Unreal news sites. Prodigious Gaming sat down with Michael Capps to discuss Unreal Championship 2. They cover the Midway buyout, the tailoring of UC2 to the Xbox, melee combat, movement, and Live gaming among others. They also go into the details of Raidens involvement in UC2.

Quote:
Pro-G: It was a surprise to see a mortal Kombat character included in the game. How many are in there and will any of their trademark moves make an appearance? Fatalities, Babalities etc? Can we expect any other surprises?

MC: I've been a huge Unreal fanboy since 98, but I've been a Mortal Kombat fan for even longer. That was the coolest thing ever; we needed to replace a character who wasn't working out, and we were nervously wondering if Midway might let us use an MK character, and they actually called us to suggest it before we asked! Raiden is a full character in the game, scouring the Liandri Tournament for warriors fit for his struggles defending the earthrealm. He does have a few of his signature moves, including the teleport and leaping attack. He's got his staff for melee fighting, and he does have a new fatality move. No Babalities, I'll leave that to the MK folks!

I am pretty curious how all the MK elements are going to impact our franchise. Being a ex-MK player I am a little conflicted, but if I know Epic it should be cool. For more information head on over to Pro-G.

All the MK elements?
Unless I missed something, the only MK-related things are a character and an announcer voice pack you can choose.
Neither sounds like something that will have a real impact.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Raiden
Teleportation
Fatalities
Leaping attack
Announcer
& maybe more once UC2 is released. But I do agree it will probably be real cool. Smile

Raiden is "just another character", although he of course he brings a few of his trademarks.
Those are the things you list right after this, so that means counting them twice.

Teleportation has been in the Unreal series for quite a while.
UT has had the Translocator, but even the original games had Nali teleporting.
In other words, this isn't exactly something MK.

Fatalities are very much MK, I forgot about those.

Leaping attacks came as a natural result of introducing melee fighting.
I wouldn't even want to count the amount of games featuring similar things.
In UT love to jump down from higher points while unloading my guns, killing the guy beneath me, landing on his corps.
I imagine it's somewhat similar in UC2, only with better "physics" for that kind of thing.

I've never played the MK games, but the cameo idea is sort of cool anyway.
I think it's because it allows for grander stories than the individual games have, plus of course it'll help attract fans of the other game.
I do have to wonder what character didn't work out, and got replaced by Raiden...

I admit I know pretty much nothing about either Unreal Championships, but does it appear to anyone else that Epic have basically forgot Unreal has its own storyline and an imaginative universe? One of the main things I loved about the first Unreal Tournament was the way the background story was woven into the game, so what's going on with this "whoa, a gateway to the Mortal Kombat dimension just totally opened in the middle of DM-Liandri and Raiden just kinda like whooshed out of it" business?

Normally I wouldn't be worried (partly because Epic are such great developers and also UC2 not being on the PC), but the fact that Epic's disregard for the amazing background universe they've created seems to continue growing makes me worry a *lot* about the next Unreal Tournament. What I'd really like to see is the gameplay of UT2004 (plus new additions of course) with the atmosphere, background, imagination and detail of the first UT, but this doesn't seem to be on Epic's list priorities these days.

Very good post. Let's hope your worries are needless and they will announce another Urneal title soon.

*crosses fingers*
