Side-view deathmatch? Say what? Are we talking about worms? Not quite. This weeks game is a mixture of Unreal Tournament and Worms (if such a thing is truly possible). Soldat, the Polish created and worms inspired, game has been around for quite a while, and offers gamers the type of repeated playtime that other games could only dream of offering.
Ok, before I get to far, I feel I need to clarify something. This game is NOT freeware, infact, it's shareware. However, due to the lack of e-mails on alternatives, and a couple personal request for a feature on this game, I'm going to go ahead and do it. What does this mean? This means that any real quality shareware game is now open for the Sunday Freeware Spotlight (which means we might be changing the title of the column, but hey, the theme is still here, to give people information on other, quality, games that are available for download).
Though describing Soldat can prove to be a challenge at times the developers of the game describe it in a way that makes perfect sense, so why mess with mess with a good thing? Heres how they describe their creation:
Soldat is a unique side-view multiplayer action game. It takes the best from games like Liero, Worms, Quake and Counter-Strike and gives you fast action gameplay with tons of blood and flesh. Soldiers fight against each other on 2D battle arenas using a deadly military arsenal. This is what multiplayer was invented for.
Ok ok ok, that's great and all, but what exactly does Soldat mean? Well, it simply means Soldier in
Features of the game include:
Game environment based on real physics rulesOver 18 weapons available:guns like MP5, Ak-74, M79, M249 Minimi, Barret M82A1, XM214 MinigunMultiplayer network game over the Internet or LANIntelligent bots6 game modes:DeathmatchPointmatchTeammatchRambomatchCapture the FlagInfiltration24 different mapsEditors: Soldat Map Maker and Interface MakerLobby server and dedicated server for Windows and Linux
Now, as mentioned before, Soldat is not freeware unfortunately, however, it's only $9USD. Which is a lot cheaper than most games of this quality. Especially when you consider they not only give you the game, but they give the community the tools to create new maps, run servers, and even create new interfaces! This is one heck of a bargain, and definately what I'd consider to be worth your time and money.
As always, the gratuitous screenshot:
Of course, you can download this game by visiting the official Soldat website here. |
