Tron, probably one of the most interesting and geeky movies of the 80s (well, at least the mainstream 80s) has spawned hundreds if not thousands of games based on some of the very simple games within the movie. Today’s Sunday Freeware Spotlight features one such game, and this time, they’ve taken it to a very pure, and very complete level.

The game I refer to is Armagetron, pronounced like Armageddon, only with a “tr” instead of the “dd” (neat, no?). This game takes probably the most famous game from the movie Tron and makes it into a fully enjoyable, lan/internet/solo playable, gaming experience. The game? Of course! Light Cycles!

To sum up the game for those who might not have played it, here's a blurb from the official website:

In this game, you ride a lightcycle around the game grid. You can only make sharp turns of 90 degrees and a wall constantly builds up after you. Make your enemies crash into your wall, but be aware that they are trying to do the same to you. Only if you are fast enough, you may be able to trap them; but the only way to speed up your lightcycle is to drive close to the dangerous walls. Prepare for exciting strategic preparations followed by action-packed close combat!

Sound easy? I think not baby puppy. This is a game of skill, chance, luck, and above all else, courage. Other renditions of this game have proven popular in the past, but none have reached the level of Armagetron in my book. And certainly none have the features this offers:

Play a game with up to four players on one computer
Fight against challenging AI opponents
Connect seventeen computers over LAN or the Internet
Team play
Useful camera perspectives
Fully configurable keyboard/mouse bindings
Adjustable game settings include:

arena size
cycle speed
blast radius of explosions
trail length
trail disappearance delay

Also, this game is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux, so with very few exception, no matter what your running, you'll be able to run this game. And if you'd like, you can always just download the source code for it and attempt to compile it on your alternate OS. Great news? But of course!

And now to the gratuitous screenshots:

Should you want to check the game out, just visit them here.
