What can I say but wow. Valve has released another video showing off the Source engine. In this video we see just exactly what High Dynamic Range Rendering can do for a game. Here is a personal screen capture from that video.
Now notice in this picture the reflection of the alien's shell and the tiles on the roof's floor tiles. You can't see it in the still shot but the shine moves when the creature does but it still comes from the light source's direction. I know several of you Doom 3 fans aren't going like hearing this but Half Life 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R are pulling away from Doom 3 graphics wise. I saw the D3 MP demo are QuakeCon and while it was cool it just looks to 'plastic' or 'Toy Story' like to me. I really, really hope Valve is able to hit the target date for HL2. |

That is a really nice movie: the light bloom in the barn looks fantastic. As with D3, though, the specular component is out of control: Looking at the stills of that scene, it almost looks like the rooftops are covered with a dusting of snow there's so much white reflecting there!. Perhaps it's just ramped up for the demo?. If they tone it down a little for the game, it'll look amazing. |

Iīm impressed with what Iīve seen in the released HL2 videos but I donīt think it look alot better then Doom3(havnīt seen the QuakeCon Doom3 MP though). Both games looks awesome but the way things interact with eachother in HL2 is realy impressive. The way things float in the water (if they would in the real world), the way things break etc (donīt like how a enemy got thrown from a grenade blast in one of the videos though). I agree with saturnfive about how some things was a little bit to shiny but the "monster" in this last video is absolutely amazing !
I realy hope they get the game finished in time (not rushed though) so we can see how it well it runs. Nice graphics is one thing but a game needs great gameplay and a great story if itīs going to be worth the money !
Iīm sure this game will have great gameplay,(do I need to write nice graphics) and a great story !
