THe Hobbit, Tolkein's first book about the land of Middle Earth, is basically about Bilbo, 60 years younger, and Gandalf, who go on an adventure with a band of Dwarves to recapture the dwarves' horde of gold, which was being guarded by a large Dragon named Smaug.
I think there were 13 dwarves, but I'm not going ot name them all now! At any rate, the Elves are mentioned much less in that story, and it has a les serious tone with lots of little adventures along with the one main large adventure.
During part of the book Bilbo bceomes lost in the passages of a mountain and stumbles across a ring, whos previous owner, Gollum, had lost by accident.
This book, I feel, was a bit more light-hearted and a bit less "dark" in tone, but still written with Tolkein's flair for accurately depicting scenes using fewer words. I think he has a knack for choosing just the right words to describe something, and also to convey someone's feelings by using the right dialogue.
If you liked the movies, then I highly recommend reading the books, starting with The Hobbit. Gives a bit of background on the LOTR and a couple of the characters. |

Oooops, I forgot to mention; Peter Jackson said he'd love to make a movie of the book The Hobbit, but it's unclear at this time whether he will be able to.
The most accurate description of the problem that I have read thus far indicates that two separate studios own the rights to make and distribute the film from that book.
I'm not sure how it got that way, but the production studio would not want to make a film to be distributed by someone else and the distribution rights don't mean much with a film to distribute.
Both companies feel they may be sitting on a goldmine and I'm sure they each expect to make lots of money, but someone has to be reasonable in order for a contract to be put together.
Other rumors are that Christopher Tolkein still own the rights to any film representation of The Hobbit and he's not likely to be willing to have a hand in any attempt to try and portray any of the books on film.
Personally, I think some people should put away their greed, selfishness, and stubborness and lend a hand in getting The Hobbit made; by Peter Jackson, WETA, and New Line. It would complete the full set of books and kick ass besides.
It only makes sense since PJ is likely to have any necessary characters (Bilbo, Gandalf) ready to go, and he has all of them props and artists ready to pick up where they left off with LOTR. It's the only way they can make it seamless. |
