So while searching for some news to post up on today, I ran across this article that struck my attention. Seems some guys over on the Pocket Heaven forums are now Overclocking their Gameboy Advances. Ok people, haven't we taken this whole overclocking trend just a tad far when we're overclocking something like that? I want to know, who out there is overclocking, and what strange overclocks have you seen? Speak out! Let yourself be heard, and show off your toaster that will burn a bagel in 3 seconds!
Anyhow, on with the news. |

Uh, why would anyone want to overclock their Gameboy Advances? I mean, I think the FPS is pretty much fixed on those anyway.... |

My gfx card is slightly OCed....that's about it. It's pretty darn safe as long as you are smart about it. The only problems I hear regard people who OCed it too much and fried their card or mobo. However, that is far more rare now that technology has many built in safety devices and there is some great software out there that helps you do it safely.
As for another weird, however cool, OC I've heard of is OCing graphing calculators. I saw somewhere some dude figured out how to OC TI calculators. It has a pretty cool use. They actual graph much faster and can crunch numbers pretty darn fast too! |

That's the whole idea of OCing. If you have a processor rated at a 3ghz clock speed then you can overclock to say 3.4Ghz (well even higher but that's just a number I'm throwing out to ya). So of course it would be faster.
I OC my gfx card cause it sucks and OCing gives me a few more fps to make up for its suckiness.
As for tools I used rivatuner for my FX 5200. For the mobo you'll have to check what kind you have etc. Most of the time you can do the OCing in the bios setup screen. I would read up on it first so you know what you are doing. |

Most MOBO and GPU companies distribute or supply on their website, software which will allow you to set the speed of those devices.
It's can be easy or difficult, depending on your interests. (Well, not difficult, but tedious.)
I have not done it for a while, but the basic idea is:
OC the MOBO until the OS doesn't boot, then back off slightly. Keep an eye on the Temps. most hardware has a built-in function to monitor temps and shut down, but make sure you set it up properly.
GPU can be OC'ed until you start to get artifacting on the screen (little bits of color or something) then back off slightly. Same rules apply for temps.
There are tricks for "tweaking" your settings to compensate for some things (Turn up the Voltage in order to get the OS to boot), and usually a preferred system of setting changes in order to maximize the potential of the OC, but I'm not going to discuss them here. THere are LOTS of sites devoted to OCing and many which give specific methods for specific hardware.
OCing is the new HotRodding. Like souping up a classic car. It's about pride and accomplishment, and saying "See what I can do!!"
At your level, I doubt you would see much difference in game performance on all but the newest games (but you may get to turn AA and stuff up to max if you couldnt' before)
Generally if you start to run into problems, and they can manifest themselves in many different ways, then simply back down a bit on something and see if it goes away. |
