I used to re-install about 6-12 months when I ran Windows98 and tried all kinds of software, but WinXP has been so good that I've only re-installed it once because I got a new MOBO and it wouldn't even boot to load correct drivers. It's been a few years (since XP first came out).
I just re-installed overtop (complete) then re-installed my Apps. That left all of my data (different partition anyway) and most of the config files for the apps. Rock solid like normal.
Xp would be great if it didn't have all of the security bugs! |

who got Pro and who Home? is Pro so much better?

I have Pro and it's rock solid. I think my system has frozen only once and it was only because I was being a dumbass anyways. I have found that Pro is worth the bucks for the extra stability.
As for the comments on security holes......win98 was far worse. The only reason you see all of this press about "this hole and that" being fixed is because they are finding them faster now that Microsoft has shifted focus on squishing bugs and plugging holes. If you notice the patches often apply to win98 meaning those holes have existed for win98 all along!

I actually haven't re-done this PC in about 9 months or so... I typically do it every 18-24 months, or if I have a problem. |
