Barbos sent this news a bit ago, and I thought it was really interesting, so I figured I'd post about it!
Quote:
A READER said that Atari has refused point blank to replace a copy protected DVD that he bought in January. He said that the CD got scratched and he asked Atari whether it would replace the disk for him, while he was quite happy to pay for the price of postage and the cost of the disk.

But when he contacted the Atari help line, he was told that the firm did not operate a formal replacement disk policy."
This is where he got this story from. I guess UT2004 is irreplaceable after all!

Ummm, am I the only peson noticing this, or I am I just retarded and don't know it? The article claims this happened in January, but 2k4 wasn't released until march. Unless I somehow jumped 1 year in to the future to 2005, the date they give doesn't make any sense

He probably reserved it in January(that's my guess)

It’s not Atari’s problem, although I agree they could have been more helpful to the guy.

He should return the disk to his vendor.

I agree, but I've contacted Sony regarding a CD that wouldn't play in my computer. They wanted me to send the disc in and they would send me a replacement. For the cost of shipping. I'd have to wait 2-3 weeks to get the new one and the cost of shipping was nearly the cost of the CD to begin with. And the problem was the copy-protection they put on it.

(Turns out the drive was having a problem, but other drives didn't. I replaced the drive with a newer one.)

If the CD was ok when you bought it and it got scratched from handling, then the Manuf. is not likely to replace it. Technically, they are not supposed to prevent you from making a legal backup either though.

That's why I like sites like gamecopyworld where you can get help in making backups. All of my favorite music CDs are backed up and my games run with NO-CD patches so I can leave the discs in their protective cases.
