Theres not much going on today, and lately i've been working my butt off trying to pick up other peoples slack on the site, which I don't really mind doing because id expect the same from them if I ever missed a day or so.
So in leu of it being a slow news day I'm posting this Friday night speak up topic:
Quote: |
What do you think about gas prices lately? In my area the prices have went up 50 cents in the last 2 days! Were hovering around $2.30-$2.40 per gallon. What prices you guys at? Do you see any end in sight? Has these price hikes made you change any of your summer plans? |
SPEAK UP IN OUR FORUMS!!! |

No offence, but you americans should SHUT UP about the price of "gas"... here in the UK prices are currently about 82p a litre... *uses internet to convert* that's $5.56 in US money. 70% to 80% of our cost goes to the government... so be grateful for what you have! |

Gas prices around my area are 2.00 so I guess we have it good. I do not plan on changing my summer plans at all but then again I don't have much going on either on the traveling front. |

Perhaps you should visit Europe by car for a few weeks.
It should make you appreciate your own country a little better |

*this idea was in our local paper this morning (charlotte observer), but the wording is mine*
higher gas prices encourage driving less and buying more efficient cars. This, in turn, is good for the environment. What the US should do would be to have a variable tax that kept the price of gas at 3 dollars/gal. Still cheap (in comparison to other countries), but enough to encourage driving less and greater efficiency. the revenue gained from this tax would be quite substantial, and could be used for alternate energy research, greater efficiency in cars, education, road repair, improvement of the healthcare system, or a decrease in income or other such taxes. Win-Win situation, in my opinion... |

That's the theory the government say they're doing in our country. It doesn't work, for two reasons...
1) Our public transport system is rubbish - money from petrol (gas to you yanks)should go on it but it doesn't...
2) Too many people need cars - rural areas etc. and they pay just as much as urban people who could catch the bus or walk if they wanted....
There was an uprising of sorts a few years back - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/919429.stm
bottom line - The government cares more about getting extra money than helping the environment! 80% tax on something people need can never be justified.... |
