While reading slashdot earlier yesterday I stumbled upon this little ditty:
Quote: |
Before the game goes on sale, id Software has been kind enough to release some benchmarks for DOOM 3 with the latest video cards on the market from NVIDIA & ATI. HardOCP has published the five page article which should help anyone trying to decide if they should upgrade their video card for DOOM 3. There's also an introductory note from John Carmack, mentioning: 'The benchmarking was conducted on-site, and the hardware vendors did not have access to the demo before hand, so we are confident that there is no egregious cheating going on.', and the HardOCP writers comment: 'As of this afternoon we were playing DOOM 3 on a 1.5GHz Pentium 4 box with a GeForce 4 MX440 video card and having a surprisingly good gaming experience. |
WOW, now theres some info that most gamers are going to be extremely happy about! Personally I never have been a fan of horror games but I might make an exception for this one. |

Those Benchmarks put Nvidia bakc up on the top of the pile, at least for Doom 3, but we'll still have to wait to see if this holds true for the long term.
id claim that neither company had an advantage in tweaking their drivers to "cheat" on the benchmarks, but didn't Nvidia work closely with id while they were actually making the game? I'm also betting that id got to use Nvidia hardware during the programming and I wouldn't be surprised if they got to use hardware that was unavailable for the general public.
Still, ATI may be able to tweak to improve performance and certainly the benchmarks aren't BAD for either.
I still dont' know how my system will perform since it's isn't really like any of the systems I've seen benchmarks for.
1.5Ghz
1GB DDR 400 Dual
Radeon 9600Pro
Am considering upping the processor, but i'm going to wait until I have the game tested out before doing so. I can think of about 6 things that I'd rather spend that money on at this time. My computer runs very well on that 1.5 anyway. |

read that quote again dude...
there is a p4 1.5 being tested and it tested pretty good
video card is a little behind... (if i remember my geforce VS. Radeon tree of evolution...) but not much so you shouldent have much trouble.
personally if you like that setup (1.5's arnt bad but their not the best anymore...) get a bigger HD, or a DVD burner. memory is good atm, vid card is what i have in my server box and i love it. try OC'ing that card before upgrading it (9600's are easily OC'ed and they actually run loads better when done properly) |

Yeah, I should OC it. Even if my CPU dies, I can always talk my wife into a new one.
I can't see replacing the video unless I get another big computer job. Frankly, the cards are just too damn expensive to buy all the time. This is an All-in-Wonder so I have the VIVO stuff and TV Tuner and FM tuner, etc.
It'll probably be ok. My HDD is big enough and I have several spares laying around if I need them. I "could" get a DVD Burner, but I'd rather not spend extra money on the Computer right now. I need to save all my extra money to buy parts for my 1969 Mustang project car. |

Sweet! I hope it won't take to long to do the Mustang. I'm not getting my hopes up too high though. The paint alone costs $1000 and that is just to buy the paint, not the other stuff I need to paint it and that could either be a realistic number, or low, depending on how I do it.
Back on topic though. I've read the hardware guide article that came out today and I think I should be ok with some OC anyway. I hope the extra RAM can help make up for some of the other system shortcomings. Funny that I bought the card at the time I did because HL2 was supposed to be coming out "soon". That was almost a year ago!! |
