Gengamers posted news stating that Half Life 2 will need internet activation before playing the single player game.

I've had a second source confirm from Valve that the Internet (and Steam) is needed to get the Single Player RETAIL game going. Here's the message (it's from Valve Support via the Web and so there are no email headers etc.)

Hello,
"Will it require setting up a STEAM account so that the game can be authenticated ONLINE at install time? (and then play OFFLINE)"

Exactly, this is how the game will be 'activated'.

I don't know about you guys, but this new evolution of copyright protection is disturbing to me. I purchase all of my games and I do not like rewarding companies that further complicate my leisure time. I was having trouble figuring out where to get the funds for Halo2, Xbox Live, and Half Life 2 this month. Luckily, Valve made my problem a little bit less complicated.

Tricky bastards...even if dont want to use Steam to get the game...you need an account to install the retail version...... I guess I'll get a steam account and pre-load the thing.... the retail collectors edition is almost the same price as the gold...just less HL2 swag...but thinking of going with silver

Seriously ... didn't anyone ever think that once XP got its' "internet-based activation" accepted that more companies would follow ?

I guess most CS-freaks won't give a damn since they don't care about the free singleplayer they're getting with their copy of CS/s.

However given XP's succes I doubt anyone except a few paranoid geeks will complain.

I just hope this means that HL2 won't have any disc-based copy-'protection' as well.

god i hope the registration website goes down, or someone hacks it or something. i would laugh for days then Razz
also, if they think this makes it so the warez people cant crack it. theyr so wrong.
i heapen to know that they got cracks that can even get passe that kind of securitys, (call and get registration code security etc)
i think adobe photoshop CS had the call security. you need to dial a number and talk to some women and get the right key.. well think it took 3 days before someone cracked it..

yah well if this is how their going to play the game with one of the most influencial games of this year (and probably next) well i guess their going to loose a LOT of people over this. Me Personally, i was going to get the retail ver but since i still need steam to play it i might as well just give myself a kick in the ass and download steam and get the silver package (depending on how much the gold is)
