Well before I take off for a few hours I want to share this tidbit of information released by GameSpy this weekend. They have a list of the most popular online games for the PC. Interestingly enough there is still a decent size crowd of gamers playing UT99. Thanks VE3D.
1. Half Life - 35985 servers, 97724 players
2. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - 2649 servers, 10110 players
3. Battlefield 1942 - 2736 servers, 9831 players
4. Americas Army: Special Forces - 1552 servers, 8992 players
5. Call of Duty - 3338 servers, 8716 players
6. Call of Duty: United Offensive - 1697 servers, 8094 players
7. Neverwinter Nights - 1622 servers, 7482 players
8. Quake 3: Arena - 2727 servers, 6866 players
9. Medal of Honor Allied Assault - 2595 servers, 5993 players
10. Unreal Tournament 2004 - 3682 servers, 5449 players
11. Battlefield: Vietnam - 1617 servers, 4736 players
12. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault Spearhead - 1293 servers, 4704 players
13. Soldier of Fortune 2 - 1622 servers, 4187 players
14. Unreal Tournament - 2619 servers, 3815 players
15. Halo: Combat Evolved - 759 servers, 3370 players Not too shabby for a game that is about to celebrate it's 5th birthday. Congrats Epic and DE! |

I still can't believe more people are playing Quake 3 than UT2004. I guess there is no accounting for taste.
I doubt even Half Life 2 will be able to defeat Half Life 1. Maybe in a couple of years.
BTW don't you have to be logged on the Gamespy Arcade to show up on that list? |

Actually the true figure for UT2004 in that Gamespy poll is actually below 3200 players when you remove the bot count because Gamespy counts bots. This puts UT2004 even below UT99. That is not good. Not good at all for UT2004. I wonder if Tycho will ever have the courage to post about the true state of the current Unreal Tournament 2004 ........ |

Yes Gamespy counts bots. You can manually count them, or you can even check http://www.csports.net which tries not to count them. You can imagine how player count could be inflated dramatically if for instance every server had 2 bots. If you have 2000 servers up that would give you 4000 bots. |
