That's right my favorite squad based shooter, Star Wars Republic Commando, is back with more goodies. This week providing a preview with Computer and Video Games and a weapon video.
Computer and Video Games conducted a preview of the Xbox version of Republic Commando. They go over the single player game but offer no Xbox multiplayer insight. In this game you will lead several clone commandos on several missions after Episode 2 and before 3.
Quote: |
Commando's tag line is "your squad is your weapon" and as three other clones Fixer, Sev and Scorcher complete your line up, things start to rapidly become more interesting. In spite of being clones, each of your team mates has individual skills and specialities which you need to employ carefully to progress through each level. |
LucasArts also released another weapons video this week. Focusing on the Trandoshan weapons, which I would guess are alien weapons, but are thankfully realistic to modern day human weaponry. They offer an Accelerated Charged Particle Array Gun which acts like a bad ass Shotgun. An ACPA Repeater which seems like kind of a wimpy chain gun. An LJ-50 Concussion Rifle that concusses both environmental and enemy targets. Finally, an LS-150 Heavy Accelerated Charged Particle Repeater that seems like chain gun with bite.
It is nice to know that other types of weapons will be added to RC. The traditional Star Wars weapons, like in Battlefront, are neat but sometimes lack punch. These Trandoshan weapons will sure hit the spot. For more information visit:

Guess what ?
I've played the Xbox demo and ???
Well it doesn't suck that much.
The demo-level is the one that's featured in one of the movies I've seen.
I really hope that the rest of the levels aren't so linear, because that was the most annoying thing.
Squad-control is pretty basic, perhaps a bit too basic compared to the true tactical fps's like R6 & SWAT.
There were 3 ways you could use them :
- hold the 'use'-key and you'd get a choice of 4 basic commands (search & destroy, secure area and 2 more)
- press the 'use' key after an enemy was targetted to tell the team to kill it
- hotspots in the level that automagically told the correct trooper to do something. Telling the squad to use the health-generators, telling certain members to hold positions, place explosives at a special location, breaching doors was covered.
The only disadvantage was that it was terribly slow.
I really can't imagine anyone using it while in combat, so you're most likely to tell them to 'search & destroy' and leave it at that except for the few specials.
I'd kill most basic enemies before I'd had a chance to ask for an assist for example.
I really hope the pc-version is a little more complex, because it was a little to light in the 'tactics' and too heavy on the mindless blasting.
The AI at least didn't try to shoot me or walk into my line of fire, so it looks like they've got that covered. |

Nice preview JaFO and I do hope the PC version is more squad tactics than an arcade shooter. |

Actually Jafo if you touch base some more on the overall experience I will put it all together and do a preview from your POV if you want to. |

I'll see if I can gather some more info from the Xbox-demo.
FYI : this demo is on the (European) coverdisc for the Januari issue of the official Xbox Magazine.
I'm not sure whether the american demo-disc for this month is the same, but I'm pretty sure it is as the console-industry tends to leave let us wait for ages. |
