Man chalk this next news post up to someone going to the Mark Rein school of How to Handle The Gaming Community. I had caught a glimpse of an interesting conversation going on over at the 3DR Forums. In it there were talking about someone doing a project a year or two back. The company's response was 'hell no' and I had wondered if there were going to let the new guys make a Mod that would generate some good buzz about Duke. Here is what I sent off to the Duke Team.
Tycho: What I am asking about that rumor has it you guys are going to squash the Duke Nukem Mod that some kids are creating for HL2. Someone emailed me this link here. I am sending you an email to get your side. My question is this. These kids aren't going to make a profit on the Mod and it would only do 3DRealms good to get added exposure, so are you guys going to let this one go or squash it?
Joe Siegler of 3DRealms: 'The short of it is no, we can't allow that.' Well what can I say to that but WTF? I mean jesus these kids aren't making a profit and they are possibly doing 3DR a favor but maybe coming up with something they hadn't thought of. But nooo, once again it is the case of 'We are the Devs, we know all.' God I am so glad that not all of my favorite Devs are like that. At least with Epic we have the Cliffmeister to offset the ignorance of Mark Rein. |

Well, ever thought about Intellectual property? They own the rights to the characters etc.. Even if the mod makers don't make any money off it, they need permission from the official IP holders.. I think 3DRealms are right not to let them make the mod public.. ofcourse it could help Nuke, but it could also hurt it..[/list] |

First of all, the modding and mod-playing community aren't the same as the general gaming community, at least not per sé.
Secondly, I read the thread and noticed 3D Realms doesn't allow people to recreate DN3D levels for DNF.
Basically that sucks, although 3DR may very well do some themselves, and I'm sure people will recreate old levels anyway.
They will recreate old levels from Quake, Doom, Halo, whatever, simply because they can, and because 3DR can do nothing about it.
That is, as long as they keep UnrealEd working properly.
Epic's stance "You can use anything from past Unreal games in current Unreal games." is something much cooler of course.
(Also I hate it when you take to time to write an in-depth question and somebody gives you the short version; ARGH! (Referring to Joe's reply.))
Still, what SuperDre said is important.
At the moment as far as I know DNF is 3DR's only source of income, or at least it will be sometime in the future...
Of course they're careful with that piece of property; after all, it's Duke Nukem!
Let's say some fans feel like doing another Unreal Ops website in Flash.
Would you like it if they just did that?
Perhaps they'd totally screw everything up, including the UO name.
Then again they might make something perfect, something much butter than UO, but that wouldn't be nice for you either probably.
You just don't have any control about what other people might do with your name.
That "We are the developers and we know everything!" has nothing to do with the reality of the situation.
It's their property and they can do whatever they want with it.
Just like Mark Rein is entitled to his opinion, even if you disagree.
Cliff isn't all-knowing at this kind of thing either... nobody is. |

Protecting your property isn't idiotic.
Actually, I'm fairly certain only someone who doesn't live off intelectual property would find it idiotic. Either that or someone that's doing so well that they can afford not to care.
But what might be considered idiotic is working on something without getting permission first.
Sorry, but pretty much everyone saw this coming as soon as that Mod was advertised. If this Mod team didn't... They're living in another planet.
And Duke won't go there to save their asses it seems. |

Duke is probably one game that will never show up...or just keep haunting us with info of its coming out...then yet again not to be seen or heard of for ages....
about the hl2 mod...something is better than nothing... but seeing how 3DRealms is anal about that happening I think they are keen on keeping everything and anything related to Duke as "NO SHOW STATUS" |

ugh. when will 3d Realms just admit Duke Nukem Forever is just a big joke? Seriously, WHERE THE FUCK IS IT???? Like, there is no actuall proof the game exists, other than them claiming they are working on. They are liars, I say, LIARS. |

I won't be buying it either way.....for lots of reasons
1) It doesn't exist
2) If it did who'd care by the time it'd show up?
3) I don't like supporting sillyness... |

What other company has ever allowed anyone else to use their IP in another engine ?
Id-Software didn't as they won't even allow anyone to convert their playermodels to Unreal-engine
Epic never did either
And as for re-using their own content ... Isn't that something they have a little more 'rights' then a bunch of amateurs ?
Who's to say they aren't already planning a DukeNukem 3D Next-gen like Id did with their 'Return to Wolfenstein' ???
In fact I'd bet that DNF effectively *is* the whole Duke-platform-history repeated in a fps-context. |

Well looks like they totally crushed the Mod...
Ironically right after doing that they claim that they will have a DNF showing at this years E3....they may just win the no show award again.. |

I am very shocked that an Unreal fan like yourself forget this one. There is a pretty famous Unreal Mod based on the Star Wars Universe. |
