Ok so I got a new XFX 6600GT for 160 after rebate and it certainly is running things smoother....in UT2k4.
However, in Half-life 2 it is stuttering like no other.
I have the latest 7189 drivers from Nvidia and I used driver cleaner beforehand to get a fresh install of them.
I'm wondering if my powersupply is actually the problem. Reason:
The card recommends a 450w power supply and to be honest I can't find the how much my supply is. It's the stock Dell power supply that came with my comp when I got it almost a year and a half ago. Im pretty certain its not 450w but I know others who have run this card on only 300w with little loss to performance.
1) So the question is.....how much wattage AM I producing and do you think this could be the reason for the stutters?
2) Is installing a power supply that big of deal and is it easy?
3) Is there any major factors I have to watch out for when buying one if I decide to upgrade?
(I'll post more later) |

I doubt it's a 450w Power supply, however, usually if it was a problem with power, you would have power related problems. Like if the machine was cutting off or rebooting while you were playing.
I'm not an expert on nVidia cards, but I highly doubt it is related to the power supply. Especially since it would use the same amount of power on UT2004 as Half-life 2. |

Holy Crap I just found out Im running with a 170w power supply......what a piece of crap! Well either way I found a thermaltake 480 for $56 on newegg with a one day sale wooot. And I found 1gb (2x512mb) of DDR400 Corsair ram with 2.5 CAS!
I think that new power supply should fix things just a bit.
Here's hoping.... |

Another question....
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153007
This is the power supply. I don't think I have serial ATA. Does this unit only have that? I can't find any information on whether it works with parallel power. From what I can tell it works with both but I have no idea.
I appreciate any help here as I have never really upgraded my PC on my own besides memory and hard drives.
Thanks,
Mark |

I'm pretty certain 81 ≠ 50 |

Talk about a blast from the past...
I simply said 81 was not equal to 50 (hence 81 ≠ 50). He thought I had said the 1gig of ram was going for $50 but that was about how much my powersupply cost.
He misread my post...tis all. |
