Well after a lot of talking and throwing ideas around, we have some good news for Unreal fans. We have been in talks with CompleteWeb (hosts of the former Ultra Unreal LANs) about merging our resources and hosting the first ever Unreal Con 2004 (tentative name)! I can already hear you say, 'Ahh your crazy for co-hosting such a grand event.' Well that may be true but we, as usual, have a big twist to this LAN. We are going to split the LAN completely in two!
We are going to have both 'Pro' and 'Amateur' pools for the event. One thing that I have noticed about LAN and Cyber Games is that they don't cater to new players. Unreal Con is going to be a lot different. We WANT noobs but we always want hardcore players. Here is why. The current state of the Unreal Community is decreasing. Not only because of the lack of players but the lack of the 'player developing process'. In the days of UT there were enough players to give you beginning, medium and high levels of play. Not to mention the fact that higher level players back then helped newer players with advice. We want to have a LAN where both newer and experienced players are welcome.
How are we going to do this? There is going to be two different pools that match newer with new and experience with experience. How are you going to keep people from lying about their experience? Well beside having a few secret tricks up our sleeve, we are going to 'sweeten' the pot for the 'Pro' players. The prizes will be a better for the experienced pool. So they have a major incentive to show they can hang with the big dogs.
Where? When? Well that is where I need your help. We are going to have the Con in the Midwest (Ohio) since it is the most central to East Coasters, Southern Eastern and Midwest people. We even have a couple of people that may come from overseas! We are slating this event tentatively for early 2004 i.e. late February/early March. We are going to try and time it around spring break so if you are in colllege you can make it too!
Prizes? Costs? Well the goal of this LAN isn't to make thousands of dollars like others ones, who shall remain nameless. We are just going to try and break even. We are only looking to have between 200-400 players. So we will figure out a price that EVERYONE can afford. We are also looking in to setting up a deal with a local hotel to get a nice discount for the gamers. As for prizes, I have been pleasantly suprised at the fact that I have received several nice ones already.
Celebrities? Strippers? Unfortunately there will be no strippers at this event because my new girlfriend would kill me We can expect to see some famous Devs. Hopefully including the red haired kind. Besides that we hope to have several top Unreal Engine games previewed here as well.
Last but not least we are going to have a 'Gamers Hardware Class'. No we are not going to try something as crazy as Kyle from [H]ardOCP would do, rather a cool class on teaching gamers about upgrading video cards, cpus and tweaking their rigs for maximum performance.
So this is where I need everyone's help. I want to hear what suggestions you have to make this event something pretty freakin' cool. I am going to put up a sticky thread in the forums for suggestions. Any stupid ideas and flamer WILL NOT be tolerated as we are trying to get serious feedback. So head on over and tell us what you think! |
