I should have the ATI Tweaking article done on Friday.  Before we get to that there are some new screenies of Halo PC over at Tiscali Games.  I still haven't got my Halo PC Beta to work properly since I moved to the ATI card.  I am getting not textures currently so I am unable to get you guys more shots yet.  Looking into it though.

WOW !!!.................that looks like crap.

I don't know what they did with those screens but they look horrible for todays standards.

It's very much less about the graphics engine, and very much more about the hardware used to take the shots. I've seen some flatout georgeous screenshots of HaloPC, and some that were, how shall I say, lacking?

Also, it depends greatly on the file format used.... but if I went into to much on that, I'd show just how much of a geek I really am...... so why not Razz

JPG - lossed. It compresses bits around eachother to create "blocks" of information. Trick is, if you set your compression ratio to high (actually, at any compression ratio, but it gets worse the higher you go), those colours NEAR the shade of other neighboring ones are actually transformed to the most relavent colour. So instead of getting the colour you were hopeing for, you get blotchy patterns. This is why JPG's imho are HORRIBLE for screenshots.

PNG - lossless. Again, another compressed image format, however this time, the PNG group did a rather wise thing by taking into account the pretty factor of anti-aliasing/etc. So it's a very crisp, sharp, image, with a reasonable filesize. Sure, you usually won't get as good of compression as you would with say, JPG, but you will get a far better output. Other problems with the format? Well, Microsoft has been exceedingly slow in importing viewing capabilities of PNG's to it's browsers. While they do now support standard PNG's, they do not support alpha-blended PNG's (which allows for anti-aliased TRANSPARENT pngs, yes, png's can replace gifs for this)

BMP - lossless. Completely uncompressed original format. This "typically" offers the best representation of how it was viewed. Though you pay a hefty price in filesize, as most bmp's can easily exceed 2megs.

Ok, I'd go on to others, but those are the main ones to be concerned with......

So yeah, guess the point is, take your screenshots with a grain of salt. Cause most people use JPG, so they're not gonna look like what they were intended.

uhhh have to break it to you but having played halo pc i can tell u firsthand that those screenshots on tiscali are representative of the graphics in halo. The reason why some screenies look good is cause they have generally been downsized so that you cant see all the imperfections. The graphics are jagged as hell, the textures are bland, and the game just looks down right ugly.

Yikes! No.70 is a particular culprit: those hills looks like someone's "had a go" at making some Halo terrain with the Unreal 1 engine Shocked

Distance fog + trees = dog's breakfast:
