Well time to cause a little huff.  There are two new Doom 3 screenshots that were released this week.  While I am very, very impressed with the lighting in these shots I am starting to not like the textures in this game.  I mean it looks as though the characters are plastic toys.  Is it me or does someone else think this?  While I no doubt believe the SP story will be good this game is defintely falling down my list of Must Have Games.  HL2 and STALKER are starting to look more and more like the winners here.

I agree, everything is too smooth.
It feels "manufactured", but still looks pretty good, thanks to the lighting effects.

I'm having a hard time looking forward to any game right now, except UT2004 and XMP, but even those seem to losing my interest. Confused
(Maybe I'm just burnt out, atm)

The more I'm seeing of normal maps, the less I'm liking 'em. The games that use them seem to have big problems controlling their specular components, resulting in overblown highlights on most surfaces. I know they show off detail beautifully, but overall, they often seem to look worse than plain old vertex lighting, and certainly not as nice as the lightmaps or baked lighting.

Heh you damn well should be looking forward to XMP, Im in on the beta now, and its a really neat game, quite addictive, and really lends itself to good fun teamplay...I havent had much time to do much of anything (including being able to do posting here Sad ) because of the university onslaught, and XMP has stolen what little time I have free (and even spilled over into time I should have been working/studying....)

I do agree Doom3 has a very odd looking style to it.
As if they'd gone for flat colours instead of textures. Perhaps they are working on the idea that their lighting is so good that it doesn't need to be compensated by detailed textures. But that hasn't quite worked out.

The lighting of Half Life 2 though is pretty damn impressive.
I hope Epic steps up to the plate soon and shows "Hey we can top that!".
