Man what can I say about this news post but bummer.  Several sites are reporting that the Half Life 2 Source Code has been leaked.  It was confirmed by Valve's Gabe Newell this afternoon.Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve. Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code. Here is what we know:
1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule. 2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled. 3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account. 4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree. 5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools). 6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.Well, this sucks. What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great. We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.GabeNow it is one thing to steal and release a beta copy of a game but to steal the whole source code is insane.  First of all this is going to hurt us gamers the most and possibly the industry as well. However it remains to be seen if this will cause further delays for HL2.  Thanks Capt. Pugwash for the heads up!

This is why it wasn't released on 9.30 Sad Course Valve is kinda dumb for storing all their source code on an internet accessable station.

Well, the source code is the programming code that runs the game.
The leak does not include any artwork, models, maps. Just the program itself, so it doesn't actually do anything. It is supposed to be a fairly old version of the code, and some folks are suggesting that it isn't really the true program though the odds are it is.

What can you do with it? It makes it a helluva lot easier to make cheats for HL2. You can see how the program does it's stuff, you can see where the programmers wrote code that can be easily hacked. You can see how any sneaky encription of data is performed.

All the Counterstrike "ragers" are rubbing their hands with glee...

Wow someone was really quite determined and dedicated, this looks like a quality job (quality in terms of execution not quality in terms of propriety). If this was some obsessed fan, they've got to know that this will only hurt the biz...*sigh*

That's not likely. The release date was changed long before this took place.

After this was announced, I started browsing about a few Forums, like the myg0t clans.... a clan dedicated to the fine art of cheats and generally pissing off other players.

Really quite an eyeopener for me. To see the psychology of some gamers. A world filled with cheats and hacks and contempt for the people they annoy, nasty Stile Porn, pirating everything out of habit, cynicism, pettiness. Really stuffed up antisocial personalities. Kids who just need a good slap across the back of the head.

Anyway it must be depressing for game devs to realise that they attract the attention of such dregs. I'm not suprised at all that Valve got such a direct attack. I'd be suprised if Epic, ID, Blizzard and others haven't also had attempts made against them.

It appears that the entire compiled game was also stolen and could possibly be released this coming week.

"Source: I have a friend in myg0t. He stated that SX hacked valves boxes, my guess is he emailed gabe, got a reply, looked at the header and grabbed his IP from there. I guess gabe shouldnt be checking mail from work.
Source: He said that he took the source and a 1.3gb file that is the game.
Source: He leaked the source to a few myg0t'ers (toy and someone else) and they leaked it together on the net. Neither of them stole it, just leaked it outside of myg0t.
Source: Ive known myg0t for some time, and was friends with g0d, they have a few skilled people, probably good enough to pull this off.
Source: my friend also stated they would have released the game as well, and that SX is writing hacks for it first.
Source: The game might be leaked sometime next week, depending on whether or not SX gives it out.
Source: You cna use this info freely, but keep my name out of it. Call me AnonJr if you wish Smile
