Ok, this might not exactly qualify as a game in everyones books, but I've gained a lot of enjoyment and knowledge from this weeks Freeware spotlight, so I figured I'd share it with the world via UO.

Celestia is an aspiring astronaughts dream. You can explore space from the comfort of your computer, and without any of the risks associated with it. This program has been around for a while, and while still beta, it's a very very enjoyable piece of work to play with.

So how does it work? Well, you simply hit "enter", then type in your location... Lets say you wanted to see Uranus, so now you type in "uranus", and hit enter again. All the sudden, you now have the distance from your current location to Uranus in your upper left hand corner, and if you then hit "g", you can travel to Uranus and see what it looks like. Nifty huh? I thought so. One of the greatest advantages to this program is you can expand it with downloadable packets from the official website that allow you to add some of the most recently discovered data to your database! So now when the hubble sees something, you can go there via this 3D tour.

This program has tons of options, and fortunately the website has a rather complete documentation as to how to get the most out of your copy. It's a completely free piece of software, so you can explore the galaxy and beyond for years to come, without ever having to pay for it. And if that's not enough to entice you, perhaps these visuals will:

So, if you'd like to get out there and explore the galaxy, why not do it at home first, and try out this great piece of software by visiting the offical website here.

This is great! Play around with the star-visibility setting ( "[" and "]" ) and zoom about madly. The number of stars in this galaxy alone is dizzying. So cool. Cool
