An eerie October good morning to everyone. I am just going to post two quick things until later this morning. You know it is a sign of a new millenium. Apple is creating a major update to their lastest OS that looks like, well Windows! Look at two of the major new features, New Finder and Fast User Switching! I personally think there are cool features on both OS X and Windows XP and it is kinda of cool to see them both emulating each other.

Also in another sign of the voodoo energy surrounding this month I stumlbed across this article on Wired. It is about the fact that no one seems to know what is going on with Half Life 2, save Valve themselves. I have also heard rumors that they may indeed still try and release it for the holidays. I will believe THAT when I see it.

hahah.. people always rip on Microsoft, but at least they don't charge $129 for a service pack... Wink

Actually, this upgrade is worth the entry price because of Expose and the fact that everything runs a lot damn faster. I had one machine running a beta of panther (a desperation move trying to get around a major hardware issue with an elderly blue&white g3). In any case, we ended up hoisting the B&W back into os 9 land and giving the person a 450mhz G4. One of the artists went over to it the other day and came back bitching that the 450 felt tons faster then his 1ghz and when would he be getting Panther! Very Happy

Honestly, I haven't used anything newer than 2000 Pro on Windows (we have one PC in the office to see how Exploiter has munged our web html) but the Shortcuts bar on the left side is a great addition to the Finder too. And Expose simply rocks. Tap F9 and all your open windows scale down and spread out for inspection. Click the one you want in the front and all the others shuffle back into their original positions with that window now on top. You have to see it to believe how cool it is. Cool

Oh, and F11 makes them all scurry offscreen so you can see your desktop.

is there an equivilent to ctrl + atl + del in macs? i have a mac at my school that freezes up every time i run photoshop and i have to restart the comp because i dont know of any other way to "end task" something. any help will be appreciated

In any case, yes, there is definitely a ctrl-alt-delete (which I presume brings up the task manager these days--not reboot like back in the bad old days of PC XTs?). In any case, I believe you are looking for cmd-opt-Esc. This will bring up the "Force Quit" dialog box.

Also, this lives under the Apple menu if you can't remember the key combo in the heat of battle with an obstinate program. Just click the Apple menu and drag down to Force Quit. You'll need to be in some other proggie besides the one that is dying on you to execute this (click any other one in the Dock to get to one where the Apple menu works).

Stupid OS X Maintenance Tricks (These may help get Photoshop to cooperate more better, but you need to be a user with an Admin passwd):
[1] Launch Applications:Utilities:Disk Utility. Choose "Repair Permissions".
[2] Delete the contents of the Caches directories. The easiest way to do this is download Cocktail from VersionTracker and select the "Empty all Caches" option in it. Then reboot.
[3] Finally, if it's still behaving wonky, check that you have all the latest patches (Adobe released about 4 of them for Photoshop). And check that your disk directories are okay if you have access to an Installer CD (you have to boot off it to check the startup volume).

And if you need access to a bunch of friendly helpful OS X geeks, check macfixitforums.com. There's quite a few knowledgeable people hanging out in there willing to help OS X beginners. Smile

Er... by the way, I assume you are talking about a computer using OS X? If not, rebooting the whole damn thing is the defacto standard for fixing any problem in OS 9. Very Happy

and i knew about repairing permissions, (i was it on an episode of the Screen Savers)

the others i cant do because their school's comps and they have download protection software on it, and when i log in i'm not an admin Sad

other than that one last question.

HOW THE FU** DO YOU GUYS USE A MOUSE WITH ONLY ONE BUTTON?

i tried to play 2k3 on that comp (downloaded the demo) and man i couldent play worth anything, because of the damned mouse!

Use a different mouse.
(usb of course)

I think those 8 button mice that Logitech makes work on a Mac... (not sure though).

Kensington has a nice mouse--$20-30 at Compusa I think and it comes with decent mouse software too. It's called the Optical Elite. Pretty much any USB mouse out there should work. We have a bunch of Microsoft Intellipoint 5-button mice at work. The OS only notices the first two buttons plus scroll wheel by default though and I've had weird experiences with the Microsoft's mouse driver software in the past, thus my recommendation of the Kensington...

Actually, at home I got rid of the Apple keyboard too and replaced it with a Microconnectors kbd. Apple used to make the nicest input devices back in the '90s, but now, not so much.
