Anyone who played the classic game Lemmings can remember those bopping little green-haired Lemmings marching across their screen. Some of us even got a kick out of trapping them all and blowing them all up! Ok, truth be told, who DIDN'T get a kick out of that? I sure as heck enjoyed it. Anyway, in the spirit of Lemmings comes the freeware monster, Pingus.
The development of Pingus started in late 1998, and has grown to become a rather solid game in their latest release (0.6.0). Over it's development history, it's suffered some delays that have slowed development, but this project still moves forward, and has quite the following. Oh, I guess this would be a good time to mention, this game does come with a warning:
WARNING: This game is highly addictive!
Ok ok ok, enough with the jibber-jabber, how about some information on the game. Lets start with what exactly is Pingus. Well, if you've played Lemmings, it's exactly like that. If you havn't played Lemmings? Imagine 20+ Penguins just trying to find their way home, but the terrain isn't exactly condusive to just walking right on home, so you, being their fearless leader, must instruct these mindless little birds how to get home. You can task them with anything from digging, to floating, to blowing up. Sound fun? Oh trust me, it's more than fun, it's flat out insanity.
Of course, what good review would be complete without a screenshot? So here ya have it:
There's plenty more information over at the official website, and I urge you to check it out. This game is available for both Linux AND Windows, and if you have another operating system, you can even download the source if you're so inclined and see if you can get it running.
-EXTRA INFO-: Seems there was never an official release of 0.6.0 for Windows, however, if you peer at their older files, there is a 0.6.0-rc1.1 canidate build, which can be downloaded here. I've tested this on my Windows machine, and it runs just fine. Simply extract it into a folder, and run the game. No install required. |
